The engineering company Motala Verkstad has gone bankrupt, writes Motala and Vadstena Newspaper.

The decision was made by the Linköping District Court on Wednesday. Around 150 employees are affected, including about 40 in Motala. The reason is that the company has not been able to pay off a tax debt that arose during the pandemic.

It feels extra heavy with responsibility to get such a gem and we naturally hope to find opportunities. We know that there is demand for their products, says bankruptcy administrator Robert Asplund to MVT.

Motala Verkstad is one of Sweden's oldest industrial companies. It was founded in 1822 by Baltzar von Platen in connection with the construction of the Göta Canal.

Over the years, the company has, among other things, manufactured bridges, ships, and steam engines. They built the Västerbron in Stockholm and the workshop is mentioned in Jules Verne's "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea". Today, the business consists largely of advanced welding and sheet metal processing.
