At least 300 police officers have been injured in Bangladesh during Friday's clashes with demonstrators at several locations in the capital city of Dhaka.

According to spokesperson Faruk Hossain, the police faced "hundreds of thousands" of demonstrators in the capital.

At least 150 police officers were taken to hospital. Another 150 received first aid, he tells AFP, adding that two police officers have been killed.

Demonstrations were banned in the capital on Friday. Throughout the country, the military has been deployed and a curfew has been imposed.

For several weeks, students have been protesting against a quota system for jobs in the public sector. The system favors, according to the demonstrators, groups allied with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. She has ruled the country since 2009 and won a new term in January after a disputed election process boycotted by the opposition.

At least 115 people have been killed in the violent protests. The attacks on the protests are "shocking and unacceptable" according to Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

According to the police, demonstrators have vandalized and set fire to several buildings. A prison has also been stormed and hundreds of prisoners freed when it was set on fire.
