Austin: Concerned about attacks on Lebanon's army

The US Defense Minister Lloyd Austin is "deeply concerned" over reports of Israeli attacks on the Lebanese army – something he has now conveyed to his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant. Three soldiers were killed over the weekend in an Israeli attack that, according to Lebanon, was directed at them.

The Lebanese military said on Sunday that an Israeli attack was directed at vehicles belonging to Lebanese soldiers in the southern parts of the country, where Israel claims to be targeting Hezbollah strongholds. A total of eight Lebanese soldiers have now been killed since the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah escalated last month.

According to Pat Ryder, spokesperson for the Pentagon, Austin and Gallant spoke to each other by phone on Wednesday. Austin then emphasized "the importance of taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of the Lebanese army's forces". He also mentioned the safety of Unifil, the UN's peacekeeping force in Lebanon.

Unifil has accused Israel of directing attacks against its forces several times in recent weeks.
