A software company in the USA, CDK Global, has been hit by a cyberattack, reports Bloomberg.
The company supplies around 15,000 car dealers in North America with a programme for everything from car sales to spare parts orders – which has been down since Wednesday.
CDK's spokesperson Lisa Finney tells CNN that the company is "actively investigating a cyber incident" and that they "out of concern for our customers have shut down most of our systems".
According to Bloomberg, Eastern European hackers are believed to be behind the attack, and sources claim that CDK is willing to pay a ransom of tens of millions of dollars to regain control of its system.
Regardless, it will take several days to resolve the problem for car dealers, who according to CNN are facing one of the year's biggest sales weekends.
Not everyone is worried, however. Car dealer Brian Benstock on Long Island outside New York tells the TV channel:
My salespeople can write down the sales agreements by hand.
