On images published by Ukrainian authorities and media, lifeless bodies can be seen scattered among debris on the ground, outside, among other things, a pharmacy and a bus stop.
"The shelling took place near a local market and a public transportation stop. So far, it is clear that seven civilians – three women and four men – were killed," according to a statement from a regional prosecutor's office.
Regional authorities report additional victims, including the injured. It is believed to be Russian artillery fire that struck.
Kherson is located in the partially occupied region of the same name in southern Ukraine, northwest of the Crimean Peninsula. The city had nearly 300,000 inhabitants before the larger outbreak of war. It was under Russian occupation between March and November 2022, until it was liberated in a Ukrainian counteroffensive.
Russian occupation forces still hold most of the Kherson region. After their retreat in 2022, they are now on the other side of the Dnieper River, which has become a natural frontline that cuts through the region. From there, they periodically shell the Ukrainian-controlled areas on the other side of the river.
