Defeat for Murray – career over

Andy Murray has played the last tennis match of his career. In pair with Dan Evans, it was a loss against Taylor Fritz/Tommy Paul in the Olympic Games doubles. I'm glad I got to step out here at the Olympic Games and finish on my own terms, some moments in recent years it hasn't been a given, says Murray.

He had previously hinted at it. But before the Olympic Games in Paris got underway, Murray confirmed what many had suspected.

"I have arrived in Paris for my very last tennis tournament. Competing for Great Britain has been the most memorable weeks of my career. I am extremely proud to get to do it one last time", he wrote on X.

Initially, the plan was for the 37-year-old to compete in both singles and doubles, but before the games started, he announced that he would not be playing singles. Instead, full focus on doubles – where he got a good start to the tournament together with his British teammate Dan Evans.

"Was ready"

But after two straight wins, the journey ended in the quarterfinals.

Americans Fritz/Paul took command immediately and won fairly comfortably in two straight sets, 6–2, 6–4 on Roland Garros clay.

I have known that this moment would come in the last few months. If it didn't happen today, it would have happened in a couple of days, and I was ready. Of course, I was emotional, since it's the last time I'll be playing a competitive match. But I'm genuinely happy right now about how it ends, says Murray according to AP.

No Olympic Games triumph to conclude, but Murray has three Olympic Games medals on his resume: singles gold in 2012, singles gold in 2016, and mixed silver in 2012. He also has three Grand Slam titles.

Major injury problems

For Murray, who has had several heavy injuries in recent years, the summer has been a bit of a farewell tour from tennis. He played doubles in Wimbledon together with his brother Jamie and afterwards was heavily praised by several tennis legends.

The pain and discomfort in my body are not good, and it's also a reason why I'm glad to quit. If I had continued trying, it could ultimately become an injury that ends my career. So I know it's the right time, says Murray.

Age: 37 years (born May 15, 1987).

Born: Glasgow, Scotland.

Main merits: A total of 46 ATP titles, including three Grand Slam titles (Wimbledon 2013 and 2016, and US Open 2012), two Olympic Games gold medals in singles (London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016), one Olympic Games silver medal in mixed doubles (London 2012).

Current: Now ending, after being eliminated from the Olympic Games, his tennis career.
