Curtains for the quarterfinals – praised Murray

Jack Draper is to fill the void after Andy Murray in British tennis. On Monday, he reached the quarterfinals in the US Open as the first Briton since Murray in 2016. If I can achieve half of what he has done, I will be happy, he says.

The 22-year-old left-hander Draper defeated Thomas Machac, Czech Republic, with 6–3, 6–1, 6–2 in the round of 16.

Thus, Draper is for the first time clear for the quarterfinals in a Grand Slam tournament and he is the first British male player to do so in the US Open since 2016.

Afterwards, he praised Andy Murray, the former world number one who ended his tennis career after the Olympic Games in Paris.

He is a legend and an icon. If I can achieve half of what he has done, I will be happy, he says according to AFP.

Australian opposition

Draper showed his talent by reaching the fourth round in the US Open last year. Now he is even better and has still not lost a set after four matches.

I lost on the Louis Armstrong Stadium in the same round last year, so it was nice to come back and do better this year, says Draper.

The 25th-seeded Draper will face Australian opposition in the quarterfinals, where he will meet Alex de Minaur or Jordan Thompson, who will meet later on Monday in an all-Australian encounter.

Loss for Wozniacki

In the women's singles, there was no quarterfinal for Danish veteran Caroline Wozniacki, 34 years old, who lost to 22nd-seeded Beatriz Haddad Maia.

The Brazilian won a more than two and a half hour long battle with 6–2, 3–6, 6–3, and it is the first time the 28-year-old reaches the quarterfinals in the US Open.

Jessica Pegula, USA, also reaches the quarterfinals after winning over Russian Diana Sjnajder with 6–4, 6–2.

Pegula has six times previously been in the quarterfinals in Grand Slam contexts – and lost every time.

Seventh time lucky?
