In the future, you won't need to carry your passport in your pocket or your driving licence in your wallet. A digital identity wallet is to replace these to increase security when it comes to e-identification.
Sweden is currently one of the few countries that do not offer an e-identification at the highest level of trust according to the EU regulation (Eidas).
In the investigation now being submitted to the government, it is proposed that Sweden should be able to use a digital identity wallet where, among other things, the driving licence will be available.
All physical and legal persons shall be given access to public and private services. Issuance shall be free of charge for physical persons and use shall be voluntary. It shall thus not be compulsory, says investigator Henrik Ardhede at a press conference.
Not to be excluded
Those who choose not to use the digital wallet shall not be excluded from certain services, notes the investigator.
The digital wallet shall thus be able to replace current approved e-identifications, Bank-id and Freja, which are at a lower security level.
The wallet will be a form of e-identification with additional functions. What is new is the ability to store and display attribute certificates, for example, driving licences or professional certificates. However, it is the user who chooses which attributes to put in their wallet, says Henrik Ardhede.
Open a bank account
Further areas of use mentioned include being able to open a bank account or file tax returns in all EU countries.
Additionally, a representative of a company shall be able to obtain an organisational wallet when representing a company and not themselves.
The Swedish Post and Telecom Authority is proposed to be the supervisory authority for the wallets. The investigation's proposal is expected to come into force in October 2025. According to the current timetable, the wallet is expected to be available for use a year later.
