Execution of German citizen in Iran causes concern

The execution of Jamshid Sharmahd in Iran causes a diplomatic storm in Germany. The carrying out of the death penalty also worries Iranians with dual citizenship. I am really scared, says Vida Mehrannia, who is married to the death-sentenced Swede Ahmadreza Djalali.

The German Foreign Ministry has submitted a formal protest to Iran's envoy, as Sharmahd held both German and Iranian citizenship.

The 69-year-old Sharmahd was arrested in 2020 and sentenced to death on charges of leading a group that allegedly carried out terrorist attacks on a mosque in Iran.

However, Sharmahd's German citizenship had no significance in the Iranian legal process. This has happened in several cases, including that of Swedish-Iranian Habib Chaab, who was executed for "terrorism" in May 2023. Chaab's execution led to condemnations.

In an interview with the French news agency AFP, Vida Mehrannia says she fears that her death-sentenced husband Ahmadreza Djalali, who was arrested in 2016 in Iran and has since become a Swedish citizen, will be executed:

We cannot prevent the same thing from happening to Ahmadreza.

Human rights groups monitoring developments in Iran warn that the executions have a "chilling effect".

There are Iranian dissidents around the world. They are now targets, says human rights lawyer Gissou Nia, who no longer dares to travel to her home country.
