The felling of forests this year is estimated to be 2 percent lower than last year, according to the Swedish Forest Agency in a press release.
Total, the Swedish Forest Agency estimates in its new forecast a felling of approximately 88 million cubic meters of forest, a decrease of 2 million compared to 2023 and 7 million compared to 2022.
The explanation is mainly a decreased use of timber within the wood products industry, according to the Swedish Forest Agency.
The felling of sawlogs is estimated to decrease by 4 percent compared to 2023. The forest industry's felling of pulpwood is expected to decrease by 1 percent, while the felling of firewood is expected to remain unchanged.
"The felling decreased already in 2023 after a couple of years with historically high felling levels, if you disregard 2005 and 2007 when the fellings were very high due to the storms Gudrun and Per. We estimate that the felling will continue to decrease", says Jonas Paulsson, statistician at the Swedish Forest Agency, according to the press release.
