The felling, which corresponds to approximately 500,000 trees, took place between March 2020 and May 2023, according to the environmental analysis firm Kayrros.

The Tesla factory in Germany has led to quite extensive felling. It must be understood in relation to the benefits of replacing cars with combustion engines with electric vehicles, says Antione Halff, chief analyst at Kayrros.

He says that the felled trees correspond to 13,000 tons of carbon dioxide, comparable to what is emitted annually by 2,800 ordinary cars with combustion engines in the USA.

It's a fraction of the number of electric cars Tesla produces and sells every quarter. You'll always have to make compromises, so you have to be aware of what the compromises entail.

The construction of the German factory has been controversial and surrounded by protests. Since May, climate activists have occupied treehouses nearby and tried to storm the facility.

In July, plans to expand the facility to double production to one million cars per year were approved.
