Harris: Not easing the pressure for a ceasefire

The USA will not stop putting pressure on Israel to bring about a ceasefire in Gaza. This is what Kamala Harris says in an interview with the American TV program "60 Minutes". We will not stop putting pressure on Israel and Arab leaders in the region, she says.

Kamala Harris – the US Vice President and presidential candidate – defended the American military support to Israel, worth several billion dollars, and said that it meant Israel could defend itself against Iran's robotic attacks last week.

When we think about the threat posed by Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran, I believe it is absolutely necessary that we do what we can so that Israel can defend itself against such attacks.

She did not want to give a straight answer to the question of whether the US has any influence over Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, considering that the country has pressured Netanyahu to agree to a ceasefire without anything happening.

Harris further stated that Washington is working towards an "agreement that would mean the release of hostages and a ceasefire".

We will not stop putting pressure on Israel and Arab leaders in the region, she said in the interview, which will be broadcast in full on Monday, reports The Guardian.

When Kamala Harris was asked if the US has a really close ally in Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, she replied that a better question is whether there is an important alliance between the American and Israeli people.

And the answer to that question is yes, she said.
