Turnout decreased across the whole of Sweden.

The only exception is Mora – where voting increased.

According to preliminary figures from the Election Authority, 50.7 per cent of eligible Swedish voters cast their ballots in the European Championship election. However, with around a quarter of a million votes still to be counted, the total figure will increase.

This means that Swedes will end up slightly better than the EU average of 51 per cent participation. However, in the previous European Championship election, 55.3 per cent of eligible Swedish voters cast their ballots. And with this decrease, the trend of increasing participation in European Championship elections is broken. Although participation did decrease between the 1995 and 1999 elections by nearly three percentage points to 38.8 per cent, it has been increasing since then.

The figure for this election will end up as the second-highest.

This year, voting increased in only one municipality. In Mora, 5.8 per cent more people voted than in the previous European Championship election. Worth noting is that a referendum on building a secondary school was held in Mora at the same time as the European Championship election.

The highest turnout was found in municipalities where residents generally have both higher incomes and higher education. At the bottom are municipalities with the opposite characteristics.

The most votes were cast in Lomma, with over 70 per cent, while the lowest turnout was in Dorotea, with 22.4 per cent.

He believes that turnout will likely be at a slightly lower level in the future.

Voting was more than three times higher in Lomma, which tops the list, compared to Dorotea at the bottom. Mora was the only municipality where voting increased. The smallest decrease was in Härryda, with -0.8 per cent, followed by Vaxholm with -1.5, Orust with -1.8, and Norrtälje with -1.9.
