Italian police have freed 33 Indian citizens who worked on a farm in the province of Verona under "slave-like conditions".
The migrant workers were forced to work seven days a week and up to twelve hours a day for a wage of 4 euros per hour, approximately 45 kronor.
Two men, also Indians, are suspected of, among other things, exploiting labor. They allegedly convinced their compatriots to pay 17,000 euros each for a temporary work permit. Some of the migrants also worked for free to pay for a permanent work permit, which they never received.
Italy is the country in Europe with the most cases of exploited labor, with over 32,000 registered incidents in the last five years, according to a report from the analysis firm Moody's.
