The Iranian singer-songwriter Shervin Hajipour has been pardoned from a three-year prison sentence, writes ABC News.
Hajipour released the song "Baraye" in 2022 in connection with the unrest in Iran following Mahsa Zhina Amini's death. The song became a kind of anthem for the protests and spread worldwide. However, Hajipour was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison for "inciting and provoking people to riot and disrupt national security".
The following year, he was awarded an American honorary Grammy for the song, the first to be awarded for a song for social change. The prize was presented on stage by President's wife Jill Biden.
On Friday, Iran's highest leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, pardoned and commuted the sentences of 2,887 prisoners. However, it is unclear whether Hajipour's case is part of that amnesty decision.
