More dog strollers are being sold than for children

Luxury strollers for thousands of kronor are crowding parks and sidewalks in South Korea – but there are no children in them. More strollers intended for dogs than for children are being sold in the country, reports Wall Street Journal.

South Korea is struggling with the industrialized world's lowest birth rate, and the government has long been fighting to get more people to form families. On average, 0.78 children are born per woman in South Korea – a third of what is required to maintain the current population size.

At the same time, the number of dogs in the country reached record levels last year, more than doubling compared to 2018. And many four-legged family members are traveling in style.

The sale of dog strollers has quadrupled since 2019, according to Pet Friends, South Korea's largest online platform for pets. Last year, more strollers for dogs were sold than for babies for the first time, a trend that continued even during the first six months of this year.

You can use our strollers for your baby or your dog, says Park Soon-Je, CEO of stroller manufacturer Airbuggy, to WSJ.

But the market here demands strollers for pets.
