More and more people with deportation decisions are expected to leave Sweden according to a new prognosis from the Migration Agency.

The assessment is that approximately 7,800 people who have been denied residence permits will return voluntarily during 2024 – 900 more than the previous prognosis. For the coming year, the prognosis is simultaneously being written up by 300 people to approximately 6,900.

"We have been tasked by the government to increase returns and are now working intensively on this, among other things by developing the activities at our return centers and increasing capacity in detention centers", says the Migration Agency's Director-General Maria Mindhammar in a press release.

The Migration Agency does not, however, report any figure on the number of people who are not expected to leave the country voluntarily. This concerns people who, for example, "go underground" or where it is assessed that coercion is required to get them to leave the country. These cases are referred to the police for enforcement.

At the same time, the Migration Agency's prognosis remains unchanged regarding the number of people who will seek asylum in Sweden, i.e., that approximately 10,000 people will seek asylum in 2024 and 9,500 people in 2025.
