Former world number one Andy Murray played his 1,000th match on the ATP tour – and won over Australian Alexej Popyrin in Queens.
My mum told me it was my thousandth match, it's a lot of matches, a lot of wear and tear on the body and it's not easy. But I managed to get through it, says the 37-year-old Scot who has been heavily injured in recent years.
Murray, who has won the Queens grass tournament five times, won 6–3, 3–6, 6–3 in his first match and grimaced his way through the end of the match.
I haven't had too many wins this year, it's been tough, so I did well. With Wimbledon a few weeks away, I need to play matches and get some wins for my confidence, he says.
Andy Murray, who has fallen to 129th in the world rankings, will end his career either after Wimbledon or the Olympics in Paris.
