In an interview with the newspaper Independent, the 38-year-old former world number one hints that it may be time to put his tennis racket on the shelf. When asked if he plans to play the US Open, which starts on August 26, he replies:

It looks like I won't, but I'll let you know soon. Right now, I can't give you a clear answer, I need some time. But it feels tough for me.

The hope of a medal place in the Olympic Games was still alive when Nadal was knocked out of the singles tournament. But even that was shattered when Americans Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek defeated the Spanish super duo Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz in Wednesday's quarterfinals in two straight sets in the doubles tournament.

When the star was asked about his relationship with Alcaraz, it became even clearer that he is uncertain about his future on the tennis court.

If I were ten years younger, we would create a fantastic relationship on the court and share many beautiful moments together. But it's not going to happen. We'll see if I continue to play on the regular tour, Nadal told the newspaper, adding:

Even if I continue to play or not, I love tennis.

The star has previously won both silver and gold in previous Olympic Games and had hoped to bring home another medal to his home country. But despite admitting some disappointment, the tennis legend felt that he had the public's support.

If it was the last time, it was an unforgettable feeling, says Nadal to Independent.
