Radically reduce cod fishing. This is now being proposed by Norway's marine research institute, which wants to see a 31 per cent lower quota limit for the Barents Sea and cod fishing. This would mean that a maximum of around 311,000 tonnes of cod could be caught next year, which is the lowest quota level since 1991, reports Norwegian NRK.
There is also a desire to see a significant reduction in saithe catches, with a 24 per cent decrease compared to current levels. However, the fishing industry is concerned:
The quota reduction was expected, but the extent of it was surprising. It will have market consequences, says Kyrre Dale, of the industry organisation Sjømat Norge.
Cod and saithe are not the only fish species that are causing concern. From Sunday night, all salmon fishing will be stopped in the southern parts of Norway, a total of 33 rivers and lakes. The reason is reports of a significant lack of salmon in the rivers.
