"Shogun" won an Emmy for best drama series and "Hacks" won the corresponding prize for comedy at the night's Emmy gala, the TV world's Oscars gala, in Los Angeles.
It is the first time in the venerable TV gala's history that a non-English speaking production takes home the finest prize, for best drama series.
"Shogun" won prizes in 17 additional categories out of the total 25 that the series, produced by the American TV channel FX but with dialogue mostly in Japanese, was nominated in.

The series, which can be seen on Disney+ in Sweden, is a new version of the classic 1980s series with Richard Chamberlain in the lead role. It has become such a huge success that it will get a continuation, despite not being intended as such from the start.
The two lead actors in the series, Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada, were also awarded for their performances.
The restaurant drama "The Bear" won eleven prizes, including the series' lead actor Jeremy Allen White.
Award-winning controversial drama
The controversial miniseries "Baby Reindeer", whose plot revolves around stalking and sexual abuse, also had a big night at the gala. Netflix drama creator and lead actor Richard Gadd was awarded both for best script and male lead role – and received the prize for best miniseries.
A woman who claims that the series is about her is suing Netflix for 170 million dollars for being portrayed as a stalker. But Richard Gadd was uncompromising in his acceptance speech.
The only recipe for success in TV is good storytelling. Good storytelling that says something about our time. So take risks, break rules, explore the uncomfortable. Dare to fail to achieve success, urged Richard Gadd in his acceptance speech.
