Never before has a Swedish candidate received as many personal votes in an election to the European Parliament as the Left Party's Jonas Sjöstedt received this year. He has surpassed Marit Paulsen's 15-year-old record, reports Altinget.

The Liberal Party's Marit Paulsen received 221,489 personal votes in the 2009 European Parliament election and Sjöstedt currently has 223,644 votes from voters. Not all votes have been fully counted yet.

Alice Bah Kuhnke (Green Party) could also surpass Paulsen's top score, but only marginally, according to Altinget.
