The Coast Guard needs to recruit over 100 new employees in the next three years. The reason is the changed security situation and membership in NATO.

In certain locations, such as Umeå, the workforce will need to be doubled. In particular, personnel are sought for specialist roles in areas such as IT and functions related to total defense.

The lack of personnel means that the Coast Guard currently has limited opportunities when it comes to environmental rescue.

"We have a satisfactory capability to detect, among other things, emissions, but we have challenges in maintaining readiness and acting in the entire surveillance mission as well as conducting environmental rescue operations," says Mikael Furberg, unit manager at the Coast Guard's operational department, in a press release.

To meet the new requirements, the authority has requested an increase in the allocation of 144 million kronor for 2025, 398 million kronor for 2026, and 515 million kronor for 2027.
