Miljöpartiet can celebrate and dance into the election night. With the majority of votes counted, the party will be the third largest in the EU election with 13.8 per cent.

It was euphoria on the Environment Party's election watch when the preliminary election result was presented, and not just because Loreen's Eurovision hit "Euphoria" was thumping out on the dance floor.

According to the preliminary election result, the Greens have increased by more than two percentage points from the previous election and have overtaken the Sweden Democrats as the third largest Swedish party in the European Parliament.

If the result stands, the Greens will send three MEPs. The three top names on the Greens' list are Alice Bah Kuhnke, Pär Holmgren and Isabella Lövin.

Pär Holmgren is jubilant over the result.

Holmgren is pleased that Lövin – a former MEP, spokesperson and minister for the Greens – is back.

In the EU election five years ago, the Greens received 11.5 per cent of the votes, which initially gave them two seats. After the UK left the EU, the party gained a third seat in 2020.

Correction: In an earlier version of the text, an incorrect result from the election night survey was reported.
