The Threat: Central Hanoi Can Be Submerged Under Water

Typhoon Yagi has caused the Red River, which runs through Vietnam's capital Hanoi, to rise by ten centimeters per hour. At the same time, the bad weather has reached Thailand, where the authorities are warning of heavy rainfall.

This is the worst flooding I've ever experienced. I didn't think the water could rise as fast as it did, says Hanoibon Nguyen Tran Van to AFP.

The flooded river threatens to submerge central parts of the multi-million city Hanoi under water. In light of the warning, a number of schools are keeping closed for the week.

Over 150 people have been confirmed dead in landslides and floods after Yagi's passage over Vietnam. Many are still missing. Large industrial areas and hundreds of thousands of hectares of farmland have been destroyed.

Neighboring countries have also been affected, with large evacuations in, among others, Laos and Myanmar. On Wednesday, the first Thai fatalities in the storm were confirmed. So far, four people in northern Thailand have died and thousands of houses in the provinces of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai have been submerged, according to authorities quoted by AFP.

Thailand's weather agency is warning of continued heavy rainfall until Tuesday next week.
