American Noah Lyles won the men's OS final on 100 meters at Stade de France in Paris and can call himself the world's fastest man.

The 27-year-old won with a time of 9.79 and was only five thousandths of a second faster than silver medalist Kishane Thompson, Jamaica. Fred Kerley, silver medalist on the distance in Tokyo three years ago, took the bronze with 9.81 and secured an American medal double. Reigning champion Marcell Jacobs, Italy, finished fifth.

It was impossible to distinguish the runners when they crossed the finish line, and it was only after reviewing the finish photo that it was possible to distribute the medals.

The American gold was the first on the men's 100 meters since Justin Gatlin, later banned for doping, won the final in Athens 2004. Even then, the bronze was taken by an American, former world record holder Maurice Greene.
