The new world record holder in the women's high jump is named Jaroslava Mahutjich.

It's clear after the Ukrainian jumped 2.10 meters during the Diamond League in Paris.

I broke the world record for my country, says Mahutjich.

Mahutjich broke the 37-year-old world record of 2.09 meters held by Stefka Kostadinova from Bulgaria since 1987.

I was super happy already at 2.07 because it was my personal best. My coach said we might want to stop there because of the OS, but I said I felt I could do it, that I could jump 2.10. Then she said "okay, let's do it", and I did it! I broke the world record for my country, and now they'll say at every competition "Jaroslava Mahutjich, world record holder, from Ukraine", says a happy Mahutjich in TV4.

The 22-year-old Mahutjich won the high jump competition with nine centimeters down to second place Nicola Olyslagers from Australia, who jumped 2.01.

Duplantis' surprise

After her achievement, Mahutjich wildly celebrated and received many congratulatory hugs.

Every competition is important. Now I won and took the world record, I'm from Ukraine and we never give up, we'll fight to the end, says the 22-year-old.

On the TV images, you could see Armand Duplantis looking surprised and happy when he finds out that Mahutjich set the world record.

I saw the jump and I had no idea it was a world record attempt, because it looked very easy almost. So I just said "ah, shit", because it feels like it's a world record that's been there forever. So it's crazy, crazy impressive and it's super fun for athletics and high jump.

In a few weeks, Mahutjich returns to Paris for the OS.

Now I need to recover, I think I need a lot of recovery after the world record. At the OS, I'll do my best and of course, I want to win the medal and add it to my collection.

Another world record

Mahutjich didn't set the only world record on Sunday.

Later in the day, Faith Kipyegon from Kenya broke her own world record on 1,500 meters when she ran 3.49,04.

Kipyegon improved her world record from 2023 by seven hundredths. The 30-year-old won the Diamond League competition almost two seconds ahead of Australian Jessica Hull.

The OS in Paris opens on July 26.
