124 voted in favor of the resolution, 14 against, and 43 abstained.

The resolution demands that "Israel immediately cease its illegal presence in occupied Palestinian territory", and that this be done within a period of "no later than 12 months".

New settlements are to be stopped, occupied land is to be returned, and it is to be made possible for Palestinians to return, according to the resolution. Furthermore, states are urged to cease supplying Israel with weapons if there are suspicions that these can be used in occupied areas.

Pressure on Israel

Behind the resolution, which was adopted during a special session called by Arab states, lies an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice in The Hague (ICJ). The special session was held just a few days before world leaders gather at the UN headquarters for this year's high-level week.

The idea is to use the pressure from the international community in the General Assembly and from the historic opinion of the ICJ to force Israel to change its behavior, said the Palestinian UN Ambassador Riyad Mansour on Monday.

Israel categorically rejects the resolution.

"Shameful decision"

This is a shameful decision that supports the Palestinian government's diplomatic terrorism, said Israel's UN Ambassador Danny Danon.

The General Assembly continues to dance to the tune of the Palestinian authority, which supports the murderers in Hamas, added Danon.

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs' spokesperson Oren Marmorstein calls the resolution "cynical" and "out of touch with reality".

The US UN Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield rejected the resolution. According to her, it will not lead to peace, and the US voted against it in the General Assembly.

Sweden abstained from voting in the General Assembly's vote, according to several media outlets.
