In eastern China, nearly 300,000 people have been evacuated from their homes in the province of Fujian since Typhoon Gaemi swept across the country. Markets, offices, and schools have been closed, and train and public transportation have been halted in the region. The typhoon has weakened somewhat, but heavy rainfall and strong winds still prevail.
On state television, images are being shown of streets transformed into rivers and fallen trees scattered across roads and parks.
The neighboring province of Zhejiang has issued its highest warning for rainstorms and evacuated nearly 7,000 people, according to state-run CCTV.
In Taiwan, five people have died, and in the Philippines, 20 lives have been lost in floods and landslides in the wake of the typhoon.
