The UN has during the week moved supplies intended for Gaza from the pier built by the American military on Gaza's coast to warehouses on solid ground in Gaza, according to the news agency AP.

This is to prevent food and other aid from being destroyed, says a spokesperson for the UN's food program WFP. The American military reports that approximately 5,000 tons have been moved to warehouses in the country.

The pier has had to be closed several times since its installation, not least due to rough seas making it difficult to use and lack of security. On Friday, the pier was closed again due to high waves. The UN is also investigating whether the pier was used in Israel's rescue operation of four hostages about a month ago.

The transports to land earlier in the week mean that it is the first time since June 9 that supplies have been moved from the pier to warehouses on solid ground. It is not known when they can reach people in Gaza. Most of the aid shipments to Gaza come by land, not via the pier. However, problems such as looting are significant, Gaza is lawless.
