The police accused the demonstrators of "armed robbery, arson, and destruction of property" and the country has introduced a curfew to stop the protest movement.

On Saturday, at least 50 demonstrators were arrested during the protests in the capital Abuja, according to the human rights organization Amnesty International's Nigerian office, according to the news agency AP.

The police have fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators in the capital Abuja outside Nigeria's national stadium. Nine police officers have also been injured during the protests, according to the police.

Many Nigerians are struggling with high living costs – inflation is at 40 percent – and are having a hard time making ends meet. An online campaign with the hashtag #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria has prompted large numbers of Nigerians to take to the streets and protest against the government's policies.

With over 220 million inhabitants, Nigeria is the world's sixth most populous country.

Corrected: In an earlier version, it was stated that journalists had been arrested, according to information from the news agency AP, which has now changed its information.
