The Arbaat Dam collapsed on Monday after heavy rainfall in the region near the Red Sea and flooded nearby communities.

The UN humanitarian agency, Ocha, stated on Tuesday that the death toll may rise as around 70 communities and towns around the dam have been affected. At least 20 small towns have been completely destroyed.

The heavy rainfall in the country has affected nearly 320,000 people in Sudan, of whom nearly 120,000 have been forced to leave their homes. According to Sudanese authorities, over 130 people have died due to flooding so far this year.

The consequences of the flooding and heavy rainfall will also have long-term effects as 10,000 livestock have disappeared. Additionally, around 70 schools have been completely or partially destroyed.

Sudan is also severely affected by the ongoing conflict between government forces and the paramilitary group RSF, which has led to one of the world's worst humanitarian disasters. Around 25 million people, more than half the population, are facing famine.
