The environment and climate change were the most important issues for Swedish voters in the EU election – at least according to the opinion poll conducted by the EU Parliament immediately after the election.

Of the Swedes surveyed, 37 per cent stated the environment as the most important reason for their vote, closely followed by democracy and rule of law issues at 20 per cent and the international situation at 15 per cent. The same three issues were also top priorities for the respondents' second choice.

Thus, Swedes differ significantly from the EU average, which instead primarily cited increased living costs and the economic situation as the most important election issues.

However, Swedes were not alone in prioritizing the climate. The same was true for Danes, Dutch, and Maltese.

The survey was conducted with over 26,000 respondents across the EU between June 13 and July 8.
