The jury in the Memphis court deliberated for six hours on Thursday before announcing their verdict. The event sparked widespread attention and demands for action against police brutality in the USA.
All three are convicted of manipulating witnesses in connection with attempting to cover up the assault. However, they are simultaneously acquitted of the charges related to responsibility for Nichols' death, where the penalty could have been life imprisonment.
One of them is, however, found guilty of causing bodily harm.
Witness manipulation can result in up to 20 years' imprisonment, while the charge of bodily harm can result in a prison sentence of ten years.
Two former police officers have also been charged in the case, but they pleaded guilty and have since testified against their former colleagues.
29-year-old Nichols was assaulted on January 7, 2023, by five police officers during an intervention in Memphis after being stopped on suspicion of reckless driving. He died three days later, and the cause of death was head injuries.
Video footage from the event shows how the five police officers, all of whom are black, repeatedly kick and hit Nichols.
