Authorities' efforts are not sufficiently effective in establishing the identity of individuals who come to Sweden, according to an audit by the National Audit Office.

The audit has focused on border controls, population registration, and applications for residence permits and citizenship.

The shortcomings can lead to individuals being granted residence permits without having the right to do so. They are also believed to be able to serve as a basis for identity-related crime, threats to Sweden's security, and incorrect payments from the welfare system.

The shortcomings at the Migration Agency, the Tax Agency, and the Public Agency are considered particularly serious, as their work affects their own and other authorities' decisions and actions.

The National Audit Office also points out shortcomings regarding cooperation and exchange of information between authorities.

"The work needs to become more effective, both in establishing identities and detecting and correcting incorrectly registered identities," says National Audit Director Claudia Gardberg Morner in a press release.
