Brazil is out of the South American Championship in football after losing their quarterfinal against Uruguay on penalties.
Uruguay now awaits Colombia in the semifinal.
The match became a rough story with a large number of free kicks and only four shots on goal, and the game contained very little of the impressive football that the two nations are otherwise known for.
Uruguay played the final part of the battle with ten men after Nahitan Nande was sent off in the 74th minute. But despite 21 minutes with a man more, the Brazilians failed to break through.
Instead, Uruguay could take control early in the penalty shootout and led 3–1 after the first three rounds. The Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker then saved José María Giménez's shot and managed to keep his team in the game. But the Uruguayans withstood the pressure and won 4–2.
Semifinal opponent Colombia had a much more comfortable quarterfinal when they crushed Panama 5–0.
The Colombians started on Saturday with a streak of 26 matches without defeat and got off to a flying start – already after a quarter of an hour, it was 2–0, and Panama was never given the opportunity to get back into the match.
