Russia's military claims to have taken control of the small town of New York, on the heavily contested front in eastern Ukraine.
The Defense Ministry in Moscow announces that Russian forces have taken control of "the strategically important logistics hub Novgorodskoje", using a name given to the town during the Soviet era.
New York (or Nju-Jork) had approximately 10,000 inhabitants before the larger outbreak of war. It is located north of the regional metropolis Donetsk and south of the long-disputed city of Bachmut. Donetsk is one of the four Ukrainian regions that Russia claimed to annex in the fall of 2022, despite not controlling any of the regions in their entirety.
The town got its attention-grabbing name when it was founded at the end of the 19th century, but it is not definitively clear why the choice fell on that particular name.
