All traffic to and from Frankfurt Airport was stopped early on Thursday morning after climate activists had entered the area.

Air traffic was able to gradually resume after a few hours. Traffic to and from Sweden was also affected.

The activists from the climate movement Letzte Generation (last generation) entered Germany's largest airport by cutting through a security fence early on Thursday morning. They then made their way on foot, by bike, and on skateboards to various locations and glued themselves to runways, the group reported. The number of participants in the action is not known.

The activists are demanding a binding international agreement to ban fossil fuels from 2030.

"Resolve the disruption"

At 5 am, air traffic at the airport was stopped. The traffic was at a standstill for about three hours but has gradually been able to resume, the airport announced on X.

The airport is also urging passengers to continue checking the status of their departures before heading to the airport.

Delayed in Sweden

The airport is the sixth largest in Europe with nearly 60 million passengers per year.

On Thursday morning, several flights in Sweden were also delayed due to the action.

There are two flights to Frankfurt and one flight from Frankfurt that are delayed due to this. But Frankfurt is a major hub, so it's hard to say what the long-term consequences will be, said Swedavia's press spokesperson Peter Wärring.

On Wednesday, climate activists also caused disruptions in air traffic at several locations in Europe, including London, Cologne, and Vienna.
