"A patient is less seriously injured and is expected to be able to leave the hospital today,” continues Pukk Härenstam, head of operations for the children's emergency department at Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital at Karolinska University Hospital.

Several players in the IFK Lidingö boys' football team were injured when lightning struck during a football training session on Thursday when a severe thunderstorm rolled in over Lidingö outside Stockholm.

Three were seriously injured and a total of eight were taken to hospital, after standing under a tree when the lightning struck.

No feeling in legs

One of the injured boys' fathers tells TV4 News that the group sought shelter under the tree when the rain intensified. It didn't look like a storm was coming, he says.

Then, out of nowhere, they were hit by lightning, says the man, who further states that his son couldn't feel his legs afterwards.

According to the father, the situation looks better for his son on Friday morning.

This morning, they did checks on how badly he was injured, everything looked good.

It is unclear whether all those taken to hospital were injured by the lightning or if people also suffered injuries in other ways.

Crisis support in the municipality

Lidingö Municipality is continuing to provide crisis support on Friday and over the weekend.

Crisis support is available on site at various locations on the island where worried and affected individuals can turn. Our crisis management team is still activated, so we're closely following developments, says communications manager Kristina Hagbard to TT.

In the morning, the area around Högsätra and the fallen tree was inspected.

There is no immediate risk around the tree, for now it can stay, it's a greater risk if you start clearing than if you let the tree stay, says Kristina Hagbard.
