The MV Ruby has 20,000 tons of ammonium nitrate on board. It is a hazardous chemical that, among other things, was behind a notable mega-explosion in Beirut's harbor in Lebanon in 2020 – but then in much smaller quantities.
The ship was loaded in a Russian harbor on the Kola Peninsula, east of northernmost Scandinavia. In connection with this, Ruby suffered hull damage, and now it seems that no harbor is willing to receive it.
Ruby has been down by the Canary Islands and waited, and also sought repairs in Norway. Now the target is set on a shipyard in Lithuania, despite the country also saying that the ship is not welcome.
The Danish Maritime Authority emphasizes that Ruby should be closely monitored during its passage through Danish waters.
