In June, Netflix was sued for defamation by a woman who claims to be the inspiration for the stalker in the series "Baby Reindeer". Now, the creator Richard Gadd is backing the streaming service, which is trying to get the record-large libel lawsuit dismissed, writes Deadline.
Netflix is now requesting a hearing in September to have the case tried.
In a 21-page appendix to the lawsuit, Gadd describes his meetings with the real Martha, and writes that the intention was never for the woman to be identifiable. However, according to Deadline, Gadd avoids mentioning that the series was furnished with the message "This is a true story".
The woman is demanding $170 million in compensation from Netflix.
It is Richard Gadd who has created and plays the lead role in the autobiographical series "Baby Reindeer". It is about a failed comedian who works at a bar, where he gets to know the woman Martha, who becomes obsessed with him.
