A cross-voting battle is underway within the Liberals to secure the party's only mandate in the European Parliament.

The top name on the list, sitting MEP Karin Karlsbro, has gathered around 3,000 personal votes when approximately 800 out of 6,589 districts had been counted by lunchtime on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the second name, Anna Maria Corazza Bildt, has received around 2,600 votes.

The great thing is that we also have personal voting, where it's the voters who choose their favourite candidate. We're waiting until all the cross-votes are counted, but the important thing is that the Liberals have a European Parliament mandate, said Karin Karlsbro to TT during Sunday's election watch.

If Anna Maria Corazza Bildt is to succeed through personal cross-voting, she will need not only to receive more cross-votes than Karlsbro but also at least 5 per cent of the party's votes. In the previous European election, that corresponded to around 8,500 votes for the Liberals.

The vote count is expected to be completed by Friday or Saturday.
