Florida were a win away from taking home the Stanley Cup title.
Instead, they were completely overrun by Edmonton, who took the match 8–1.
It was incredibly nice, says Swedish goal-scorer Mattias Janmark.
Janmark set the tone three minutes into the match with the evening's first goal in front of a roaring home crowd – and then the goals poured in throughout all three periods.
There were a total of eight goals for Edmonton on the evening, Dylan Holloway scored two of them and Janmark contributed with an assist. Edmonton goalkeeper Stuart Skinner worked hard and made 32 saves, and despite Florida scoring a goal in the first period, they never had a real chance.
"Get the crowd in"
We needed to get the first goal to get the crowd into the match. So it was really nice to score 1–0 on that counter-attack and then see Henrique increase it to 2–0, says Mattias Janmark to Expressen after the match.
It feels like everything has gone against us in the previous three final matches. Now we got the bounces and it was incredibly nice, he continues.
Edmonton thus keeps their hopes of winning alive. The score is now 3–1 to Florida in the series, which is best of seven.
Better than Gretzky
We did our job on the offensive side today, but this is just one win for us. We need to get better and keep it up, says Edmonton's star centre Leon Draisaitl to nhl.com.
The thrashing also brought a historic record. Apart from his first final goal, Edmonton's Connor McDavid also made three assists. He thus beats Wayne Gretzky's old record from 1988 for most assists in a single playoff.
