Since mid-May, parts of northern India have been plagued by a heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 45 degrees. The heatwave is the longest on record, according to meteorologists.

In Delhi, temperatures matching the city's record of 49.2 degrees from 2022 have been recorded. At 17 different measuring stations across the capital on 29 May, temperatures of 49 degrees were measured.

Temperatures are expected to fall when the annual monsoon rains move northwards. However, the IMD warns that the danger is not over yet.

India is third among the countries in the world emitting the most greenhouse gases. By 2070, India has pledged to reach net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases, two decades after most Western countries. The country's energy supply currently relies on coal power.
