The FBI confirms that it was a bullet from the perpetrator's rifle that injured former President Donald Trump's ear at the election rally on July 13.
Thus, FBI Director Christopher Wray dispels any doubts about what hit Trump, doubts that Wray himself contributed to through statements he made when questioned in Congress about the assassination attempt on Trump.
"What hit the former President Trump in the ear was a bullet, either whole or in smaller parts, fired from the perpetrator's rifle," the FBI says in a statement now.
When Wray was questioned in Congress on July 24, he said it was not entirely clear whether it was a bullet or some form of shrapnel that hit. But he spoke unreservedly about "the bullet" in the next moment.
Donald Trump, his campaign, and supporters have heavily criticized the FBI for not wanting to say from the start that it was a bullet, something Trump himself and his staff, including his former doctor Ronnie Jackson, have said. Photos from a photographer have also been published, showing signs of some kind of projectile passing by Trump.
But it took a week after the assassination attempt before the Trump campaign, through a letter from Jackson, provided a medical report on the injury.
The FBI's statement now is the clearest official statement from the authorities so far that it was a bullet.
