To ensure that no unrest occurs in connection with the French parliamentary election on Sunday, July 7, France has called in 30,000 extra police officers. This is stated by the country's Foreign Minister Gérald Darmanin in an interview with the TV channel France 2.
This is a very large operation to ensure that the extreme left and far right do not exploit the result to create disorder, says Darmanin.
On Wednesday evening, a group of election workers, including the government's spokeswoman Prisca Thévenot, were attacked while they were out on campaign.
Thévenot herself was not injured, but a colleague of hers and an election worker were, according to French media, taken to hospital.
