The Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's newly started political movement has attracted enough parties to form a new group in the EU Parliament – a victory for his latest attempt to drive Brussels to the right.

To be able to start a group, at least 23 members from at least seven countries are required.

On Saturday, the conservative Danish People's Party announced that the party wants to switch groups from the far-right ID to "European Patriots", which Orbán's group will be called.

The Belgian far-right party Vlaams Belang (approximately "Flemish Interest" in Swedish), which advocates for independence for Flanders, also wants to join.

In addition to the Hungarian Fidesz, Austria's right-wing populist Freedom Party (FPÖ) and the Czech former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš's party ANO have previously announced plans to join the group, as well as Portugal's right-wing extremist Chega party and Spain's Vox.

Orbán announced plans to form a new party group on June 30, promising a "new era" that will "change European politics".

The affiliated parties will meet in Brussels on Monday.
