Germany has decided to ban the right-wing extremist magazine Compact and authorities are searching buildings connected to the magazine, according to several media outlets.

Searches are also being conducted in residences connected to actors for Compact.

According to the country's interior minister Nancy Faeser, the ban is being introduced because Compact is "a central mouthpiece for the right-wing extremist environment", writes Deutsche Welle.

The German nationalist party AfD condemns the ban as a "serious blow to press freedom".

Compact was founded in 2010 by Jürgen Elsässer, who in his youth was a member of the German Communist Party. He was then opposed to the reunification of East and West Germany and the dissolution of the GDR.

Facebook and Instagram's parent company Meta removed the magazine's accounts from their platforms in 2020 due to incitement against a population group.
