German ban on right-wing extremist newspaper lifted

The German administrative court lifts the temporary ban on the right-wing extremist magazine Compact. It was Interior Minister Nancy Faeser who issued a publication ban in mid-July.

Compact has now appealed to the Administrative Court to have the ban lifted during the time the case is being prepared, which usually takes several months.

In a statement, the court states that the magazine indeed has "an aggressive and militant stance towards many fundamental constitutional rights", but that it is not clear whether a ban can be considered proportionate.

The ban on Compact was imposed on July 16 this year, and German media reported that the authorities searched buildings connected to the magazine, as well as residences connected to its employees.

According to Nancy Faeser, the ban was introduced because Compact is "a central mouthpiece for the right-wing extremist environment".

Compact was founded in 2010 by Jürgen Elsässer, who in his youth was a member of the German Communist Party. He was then opposed to the reunification of East and West Germany and the dissolution of the GDR.

Facebook and Instagram's parent company Meta removed the magazine's accounts from its platforms in 2020 due to incitement against a population group.
