The French government's spokeswoman and former minister Prisca Thévenot, and people who were with her, were attacked when they put up posters in Meudon southwest of Paris on Wednesday evening. They were out on a campaign ahead of the second round of France's parliamentary elections on July 7.

Thévenot herself was not injured, but an aide to her and a campaign worker were taken to hospital, French media report. According to Le Monde, the prosecutor's office in Nanterre has launched an investigation into the incident.

Thévenot is a member of parliament and represents President Emmanuel Macron's party RE, which backed down significantly in the first round on Sunday.

"Violence and threats do not belong in our democracy" commented Prime Minister Gabriel Attal on X and urged everyone to distance themselves from the climate of violence and hatred that seems to be taking hold.

Earlier in the day, a representative of the National Rally, the far-right party led by Marine Le Pen, was attacked in Haut-Savoie. The police have arrested one person.
